16th November 2009Margot Wallström, Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for institutional relations and the communication strategy declared on 11th November that the Commission was going to commit to a far-reaching public consultation to help define the practical means to implement the citizens' initiative which is part of the Lisbon Treaty. From now on if one million citizens, from a "significant" number of Member States come together in petition they can invite the Commission to make a legislative proposal in an area which is of European Union competence. The consultation is open until January 2010.
