The General Assembly adopts a resolution on Syria
20th February 2012On 16th February the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution 137 votes in support, 12 against and 17 abstentions in which it firmly condemns "the continued infringements - which are widespread and systematic - of Human Rights and fundamental freedoms by the Syrian authorities." The resolution also supports the mediation of the Arab League and recommends the appointment of a UN special envoy for Syria. This non-binding resolution is symbolic. It comes in response to the veto set by China and Russia on 4th February. The UN's General Assembly has answered with one voice to the Syrian problem.
