Meeting of G8 Foreign Affairs Ministers
16th April 2012On 11th and 12th April the G8 Foreign Ministers met in Washington. During this meeting they discussed the situation in Mali asking for "all sides" to "agree on a cease-fire and to start negotiations". They also said they were "alarmed" at the military conflict and the humanitarian situation in South Sudan. Regarding Syria they asked the government to accept the plan put forward by the UN's Special Envoy, Kofi Annan. The Iranian nuclear programme and North Korea's threat to launch a missile in April were also discussed. Ministers re-iterated their support to the new Arab democracies and discussed the progressive transfer of responsibility for the upkeep of public order in Afghanistan over to the Afghan authorities.
