Speech delivered during the plenary session of the Regions Committee
7th May 2012On the occasion of the plenary session of the Regions Committee on 3rd May the President of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy delivered a speech on growth and the need to consolidate the European budget. He pointed to the commitment of all of the institutions to counter "the worst crisis since the 1970's" and recalled the battle that was not only that of the EU, but also that of the Member States, which must implement budgetary consolidation measures. In his opinion austerity was not implemented out of "pleasure" but to create "more sustainable growth".
