Brenner Tunnel
5th May 2008Italian President Giorgio Napolitano symbolically laid the foundation stone of the Brenner railway tunnel on 28th April; the tunnel will link Austria to Italy by 2022 passing under the Alps free road traffic of lorries. The project is due to cost 6 billion euros according budgetary forecasts established in 2006. Austrian and Italian transport ministers came to a co-operation agreement in 2007 on the completion of the tunnel in 2022. The Brenner Tunnel will be one of the longest in the world (56km) and is the most ambitious European infrastructure projects. It will link Innsbruck (Austrian Tyrol) to Bressanona (Trentino-Alto Adige).
