Franco-American Strategy Group
Johns Hopkins University - Robert Schuman Foundation

Friday 5th December 2008

Conference :
2009 : what challenges for the Franco-American relationship ?

On Friday 5th December at the International Conference Centre in Paris, one month after the American presidential election an initial conference will bring together ten experts and prominent people (Jean François-Poncet, former Foreign Minister, Chairman of the France-Germany Interparliamentary Friendship Group and Senator for the Lot and Garonne and Jean-David Levitte, Ambassador for France, Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the French Republic).

In June 2008, the Center for Transatlantic Relations of the Johns Hopkins University (DC) and the Robert Schuman Foundation created a Franco-American Strategy Group to look into five vital themes:
• strategic perspectives (NATO, EU, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, anti-missile defence, nuclear arms, etc.),
• the Mediterranean,
• Africa,
• Russia,
• the economy (challenges and benefits of globalisation, transatlantic, bilateral investments US/France, the financial and economic crisis etc.).
Two experts are dedicated to each theme: one American, the other French. Their work is directed by Michel Foucher on the French side and Esther Brimmer, on the American side. This exchange of views aims to enhance relations between the « two new administrations », that of Nicolas Sarkozy since May 2007 and that of the future American President elected on 4th November - who will take up office in January 2009.

This first conference will take place on Friday 5th December 2008 from 8:30am to 5:30pm
at the International Conference Centre
5 avenue des Portugais - 75116 Paris
