Political system

Republic, parliamentary democracy (Constitution passed by referendum on 28th June 1996).

Head of State : Volodymyr Zelensky, elected on 21stApril 2019 by direct universal suffrage and took office on 20th May 2019.

Prime Minister Ioulia Svyrydenko since 17th July 2025, following the resignation of Denys Chmyhal on 15th July 2025.

Monocameral parliamentary system The Parliament (Verkhovna Rada) is composed of 450 seats; the representatives are elected for 5 years by direct universal suffrage.

The Parliament has 450 seats. However, 403 seats are currently filled due to the suspension of the opposition party because of its alleged ties with Russia.

  • On January 1st 2016, the free trade agreement between Ukraine and the EU came into force. On February 24th, Ukraine was attacked by the Russian Federation. The war has been ongoing since then. On June 23rd, 2022, Ukraine was grated EU candidate status, and on December 16th, 2023, the heads of state or government of the EU voted to open accession negotiations with Ukraine. Since the start of the war, EU member states have provided more than € 143 billion worth of aid to Ukraine.
