The Declaration of 9 May 1950

Robert Schuman
European Issue n°595 - 10/05/2021

The declaration of 9 May 1950 is considered the founding text of European integration. Delivered by Robert Schuman, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, in the Salon de l'Horloge of the Quai d'Orsay in Paris, this declaration proposed the creation of a European organisation responsible for pooling French and German coal and steel production and gave rise to the first European Community (ECSC). In 1985, 9 May was declared "Europe Day". We offer you the full text of this declaration accompanied by Robert Schuman's opening remarks.
